Fulbright Memorial Fund (FMF) Teacher Program
Japan
Travel Stipend
Overview
The FMF Teacher Program provides financial support for teachers to spend three weeks in Japan. Participants learn about Japanese culture and education through meetings with Japanese government officials and teachers, visits to schools and museums, and a short home-stay. Throughout the trip, participants discuss ideas for sharing their experiences in Japan with their school communities. The FMF Teacher Program is offered in June, October, and November.
Eligibility and Requirements
Applicants for the June visit must be full-time grade 1-12 teachers or administrators and U.S. citizens. Applicants should not have previously taught or visited Japanese schools and must agree to submit a report about their efforts to apply lessons from the trip in their schools.
Applicants should be interested in issues of curriculum development and pedagogy related to Japan. Applicants should also be committed to sharing knowledge gained through FMF, and teaching for at least two or three years after the FMF experience. Applicants should be flexible, and should work well as members of teams.
Financial Matters
Participants will receive round-trip travel to Japan, transportation around Japan, lodging, and meals.
Application Process
Two references and a statement of purpose are required. Applications are available online and are due in December. Accepted applicants are notified in late March. Applicants are selected based on their merit and the degree by which their participation will benefit their school and community. At least two applicants are selected from each of the 50 states and Washington, DC and approximately 600 applicants are invited to participate each year.
